HMAS Watson Redevelopment (WE10) — Construction Final Clean
Project: HMAS Watson Redevelopment – Work Element WE10
Location: Watsons Bay / South Head, Sydney NSW (Metro)
Client: Lendlease (Managing Contractor for the Royal Australian Navy)
Scope: Builder’s Clean & Final Clean of the Defence training base redevelopment
Project Overview
Lendlease was awarded the ~$389 million contract by the Department of Defence to redevelop HMAS Watson, the Navy’s principal maritime warfare training establishment in Sydney.
The upgrades include new training precincts, living‑in accommodation for about 236 trainees, a medical clinic, and upgrades to existing water, electrical and communications infrastructure.
Scope of Works (Cleaning)
Internal builder’s clean of new training facilities, living‑in blocks, service areas.
External cleaning of façades, glazing and outdoor hard‑landscaping as part of the redevelopment.
Staged cleaning to align with Lendlease’s delivery program and live base operations (training continues during works)
Final clean delivered ahead of handover of each completed zone.
Challenges & Solutions
The site is a fully‑operational defence establishment: training, live operations and strict security meant our cleaning programmes had to be highly coordinated and strictly sequenced.
Constrained access and logistics at South Head / Watsons Bay, including narrow roads and environment‑sensitive setting, required specialised planning.
A large multi‑element project across training, accommodation and infrastructure domains required cleaning scope to flex with evolving building types and finishes.
Outcome
The cleaning works supported on‑time and staged handover of facilities as delivered by Lendlease, with presentation standards aligned to a high‑security defence environment. The redevelopment ensures HMAS Watson can continue to support up to 1,300 trainees per year.
